Shanghai is China's most comprehensive industrial and commercial city, ranking the first in population and population density. As a tourist city, it attracts travelers from both home and abroad by its commercial activity rather than scenic beauty.

Shanghai is situated on the bank of the Yangtze River Delta, with East River in the east and Hangzhou delta in the south. Housing a population of over 16 million at present, it was once a small town supported by fishing and weaving before the first Opium War. Late in 1990, the central government started developing the area, and has since became the well-known booming metropolis city.

Today, with a land area covering 6,340 square kilometers and a population of 16 million people, Shanghai has become the largest economic center in China and an important port city. It has maintained a GDP growth rate of over 10 percent in the last 11 years. More than 100 foreign countries and regions have investments in some 30,000 local projects, taking advantage of the 74 deep-water berths and 20 international container piers at the Shanghai Port. The Yangshan International Deep Water Port that is currently under construction is expected to give a modern twist to the port city. Hongqiao and Pudong International airports link Shanghai with 141 cities in 29 foreign countries and regions everyday.

As a dream destination for shopping, Shanghai boasts stars of large shopping cities, malls, markets and streets that sell all kinds of world brands, fashions, antiques and other local products. The four most flourishing shopping centers - Yuyuan Shopping City, Xujiahui Shopping City, New Shanghai Shopping City and Jiali Sleepless City and streets like Nanjing Road and Huaihai Road are often bustling with shoppers and visitors of different skins. Coming to Shanghai, you can also have a taste of the delicious dishes of different cuisines, including the various distinctive Chinese cuisines, KFC, authentic French dishes and other western food. Chinese tea houses and western pubs also abound.

When traveling in Shanghai, you really notice its rapid modernization from the convenient transportation and communication networks. Shanghai is equipped with two first-class international airports and three railway stations that link with hundreds of cities and regions at home and abroad. The combination of the magnetic levitation vehicle (high speed train service), subways, buses and taxis in and around the city will doubtless provide a comfortable and satisfactory service for visitors.
